Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions (and some you might not have thought about!) to help you learn more about EVs and EV chargers.
How does an EV charger work?
EV chargers contain specialised EVSE hardware that uses an electricity source to charge the EV battery. For example, the EV charger (in the vehicle) will convert the energy from AC to DC, whereas fast chargers that use DC power will send DC power directly to the battery. Learn more about charging an electric vehicle from the NSW Government.
How do I use an EV charger?
The EV charging process may vary between EVs and EV chargers and will depend on whether you use an adaptor cable or the one from the EV charger, or whether it’s a free EV charging station, pay-as-you-go, or subscription-based EV charging setup.
First, you will connect the cable to the EV charger or use one already attached, and you may also need to choose a mode, such as CCS2 or CHAdeMO.
When you connect the cable to the EV, you may hear a lock-in sound, and you can check your dashboard for indicators that it is charging.
If you use an app, you will see when the vehicle is charged. You may need to press stop on the EV charger or select this via the app when you have enough charge. You will then disconnect the cable and return it to the position on the charging station.
How long does it take to charge the battery in an electric vehicle?
Charging times for an Electric Vehicle (EV) will depend on the type of connector, adaptor cable, and power source available. The amount of time to charge an EV with 7kWh, from empty to full, is approximately 10 hours. An Ultrarapid 350kWh charger could charge the EV in as little as 8 minutes.
Kilometres of range added per hour of charging:
– 3.7kW slow – Up to 20 km
– 7kW fast – Up to 40 km
– 22kW fast – Up to 120 km
– 50kW rapid – Up to 300 km
– 150kW rapid – Up to 900 km
Which EV charger is best?
ABB, and of course Tesla, are leading the way in EV charging. We’ve partnered with the number one national provider, EVSE Australia, to bring our clients high-quality EV charger installation services in Sydney.
Which EV charger is the fastest?
The DC rapid EV charger is the fastest, with ABB’s Terra 360 EV charger taking out the title of the world’s fastest EV charger, boasting a full charge in under 15 minutes.
How much does it cost to charge an electric vehicle in Sydney?
According to the Electric Vehicle Council in Australia, running an EV costs $4 per 100km. And, Canstar Blue estimate the cost of charging an electric vehicle in Sydney and across Australia to be approximately a third to a quarter cheaper than fuelling a petrol car.
Which energy companies offer the best EV charging plans in Sydney?
AGL, OVO Energy, Red Energy and Powershop are the frontrunners for EV charging plans in NSW, with AGL and Red Energy offering the most savings. However, you will reap the most benefits if you only charge overnight between 12 AM and 4 AM with Powershop’s Super Off-Peak Tariff or between 12 AM to 5 AM with OVO Energy’s OVO Drive Electric Car Plan. You will need a smart meter installed to access these varying time tariffs.
Where can I charge my EV for free?
Jolt has built a network of EV charging stations that allow you to charge up to 7kWh (around 45km) for free in any 24 hour period. After this point, you begin to incur charges. You will need to download their app to help you locate an EV charging station and keep up to date with your EV’s charge status. The app will notify you when you get to the 7kWh mark.
If you are an NRMA member, you can charge your vehicle for free with one of their EV chargers in Sydney.
Will the new Electric Vehicle Tax eliminate the cost savings of electric vehicles?
According to the NSW Government’s EV Strategy, EV drivers will begin to pay a road user charge (or EV Tax), but it will be roughly 50% less than petrol or diesel-fuelled vehicles. In addition to the lower charging costs, there will still be cost savings. The new EV Tax or road user charge will come into effect from the 1st July 2027, or when EVs make up 30% of all new vehicle sales (not vehicles on the road). EV owners will be charged 2.5 cents per kilometre and plugin hybrids 80% of the standard cost incurred by petrol-fuelled cars. Using the NSW Government’s example, petrol and diesel vehicles will cost approximately $622 per annum in fuel excise. Under the new road user charge, electric vehicle drivers will pay approximately $315 each year.
How long does it take to install an EV charger?
A standard home EV charger installation in Sydney requiring no additional wiring or installing a 3-phase circuit can take approximately an hour.
For multi-dwelling or commercial EV charging stations, the time taken to install the new EV charging solution will depend on the location and hardware requirements, and your certified EV electrician will recommend installation times.
