Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions (and some you might not have thought about!) to help you learn more about smart home automation.
How do I know if my emergency and exit lights are working?
To identify whether your emergency and exit lights are working, look for a visible red or green LED charge indicator light on each unit.
If you find a light, whether red or green, this means the unit is getting power, and the battery is being charged. If you cannot locate a light, it means the unit is either not receiving power or there has been a battery failure.
You can also test the unit by locating the test button next to the indicator light. Hold this button down, and the unit should go into emergency mode for a few moments if it is functioning normally.
Contact us immediately to have this unit replaced if this test fails.
How are emergency and exit lights tested?
Each emergency and exit light must undergo a Duration Test every six months.
When checked manually, emergency and exit lighting units must be disconnected from mains power (mains power is usually switched off). They must run on battery power for 90 minutes to pass the test.
If self-testing emergency light fittings have been installed, they will automatically undergo this test every six months. Depending on the outcome of the test, they will display a pass or fail light for the electrician to check. The electrician will also walk around the site and manually check fluorescent tube emergency fittings.
With a Smart computer monitored system, all lighting units will be integrated and can communicate with the main system through a wired or wireless network. Testing and maintenance can be scheduled and checked remotely.
Who can test emergency lighting?
All testing must be carried out by a qualified electrician that is licensed to will inspect and test exit lighting, emergency lighting, and associated components.
